1. What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
As an attorney, my job is to educate a person as to what the law is and show them how it applies to their situation. Each and every client needs to know all they can about their situation in order to make an informed and intelligent decision. If a client wants to review the legal authority that I bring to their attention, I will happily provide it to the client to read so they can form their own opinion. In the end, my job is to point out the best way to do, or not do, a certain thing. I want to empower each client to make the best choice(s) possible for themselves and their families.

2. What is your willingness to review documents prepared by clients?
I am happy to provide this service. However, each client needs to understand that I cannot review any document in a vacuum. My document review, and endorsement of that document, is only good if I am made aware of all material facts and know the procedural posture of the case. If my knowledge of these items and issues is lacking, then my review will not prove to be correct, helpful, or effective.

3. What is your willingness to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
I am agreeable to do doing this. But each client needs to understand that the coaching is only good if I am made aware of all material facts and know the procedural posture of the case. If my knowledge of these items and issues is lacking, then my review will not prove to be correct, helpful, or effective. Also, knowing who the Judge is, which is often unknown, makes a big difference as each Judge brings to the table their own values, opinions, and backgrounds which of course always influences the outcome of a case.

4. Do you have fixed-price services or fees? If so, what are they?
I charge an hourly rate for Divorce and Family Law, a non-refundable flat Fee retainer for Criminal Defense cases, and contingent fees (no recovery no fee) for personal injury cases.

5. Hourly rates:
Divorce/Family Law - $250.00 per hour.

6. Do you offer a free initial consultation?
Free 45 minute initial consultation.

7. Do you have a typical retainer? If so, what is it?
The retainer varies depending on the job requested by the client.

8. Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
When I was a young man, I needed the help of an attorney. He was wise, compassionate, and effective. I could see the way he helped my life at such a difficult time, and I wanted to help others in the same way. I carried this with me though college, graduate school, and into the professional world. After working as a paralegal, I knew I wanted to be an attorney and I knew I would be good at it. I believe that my job is about helping people through hard times, as my attorney did for me long ago. This is what motivates me, and is ultimately the most gratifying part of my job.

9. What work experience, education, or life experience makes you a better lawyer?
I have been in the legal business since 1993. That experience, combined with my strong sense of justice, compassion, and motivation, makes me an excellent attorney.

10. Why did you choose your primary area of practice?
As noted above, I always wanted my legal career to be about helping people. During my career, I have worked for both private firms and the government. In the private firm world, I worked for both individuals (plaintiffs) and insurance companies (defendants). Somehow, my career path always turned back towards helping the common person deal with the every day issues of life intersecting with the legal system. The areas of practice I new work in are a reflection of this.

11. What do you like best about your career?
The legal system tends to grind people up and spit them out, and in the process justice is often lost. More often than not, the justice system is not about the truth but more about the perception of truth. When I can overcome that unfortunate reality, and achieve justice, it brings me a deep sense of gratification.

12. Tell us about the people working with you at your law firm:
I try to hire people who hold values similar to my own. I do not want people who are just punching a clock and earning a paycheck. My employees care about the quality of their work, and more importantly, have compassion and empathy for the clients of my firm.

13. What are your strengths and style?
My strengths are that I am direct, straightforward, and confident in what I do. I am a good listener, and an even better learner. I do not hide the ball, I try to keep things as simple as they can be, and I attack the situation directly. I believe the most important attribute in the practice of law is to be able to listen, to learn, and then apply both to a real life situation. From these qualities, and my inherent personality, people tend to believe in me and to trust in me. This often translates well in a court room whether the listener is a judge or a jury. Over the years, my strengths and style have proven to be reliable and effective.

14. What are your personal interests?
I am a family man - I am married and have 4 children. I try to balance my family life with my professional life, and every once in while mix in personal interests. My personal interests center around sports and the arts. I enjoy playing baseball and golf, and my interest in the theater and music is growing (thanks to me wife and oldest daughter). Of course a weekend bar-b-que with good food, nice wine, and tasty beer are also at the top of my list of favorite things to do.
